After an ASW exercise with Scamp south of Manila Bay, Carpenter arrived at Subic Bay on 24 September to have her ECM antenna repaired. Departing Hawaii on 2 July 1962, the destroyer arrived at Yokosuka 10 days later. The truth is, a profitable health regimen isn’t full with out rest days. Emerging from the yard in August with a brand new helicopter flight deck and a facet-scanning AN/SQS-26 sonar to improve her submarine detection capabilities, she spent the remainder of the year conducting refresher coaching and local operations designed to check her newly put in equipment.
